Horizontal vessel

Survey

Description

The horizontal vessel is placed upon saddles, which are hinged at the foundation. Thus the shell of the vessel is locally loaded with membrane and bending stresses caused by a horizontal acceleration due to earthquake. These local stresses and strains depend on the flexibility of the joint with the saddle and influence the positional stability of the vessel.

What we did

For horizontal vessels the verifications for earthquake were led considering the local stresses and strains near the joint at the saddle. The verifications were done based on AD-S3/4 (working group for pressure vessels). To serve the owner of the chemical plant, we worked out an easy verification concept that could be used by the staff of the plant in advance.
