Tank with a floating roof

fe-modell of the shell

Description

The tank with the diameter D=16,5m and the height H=14,6m was intended to be used longer than the ordinary operating time. A review of the existing calculations showed that the original verifications already assessed exceeding stresses and that the required safety against buckling of the shell was not ensured.

What we did

We designed and drew the required reinforment for the shell of the tank with the floating roof. The calculation was done with respect of the unanchored shell considering that local lift off increases the buckling risk. The buckling values were determined using a fe-calculation including gap-/spring-elements at the foundation. The additional idealization of the bottom plate with the liquid pressures on it led to a close-to-reality system. The verification for buckling was fulfilled by includig an additional ring stiffener and increasing the torsional stiffness of the edge-ring. The minium cross section of the additional ring stiffener was calculated using the British Standard.
