Gasholder and mine subsidence

subsidence characteristics

Description

The working of two layers below the gasholder will result in mine subsidence. Because of the large stiffness of the gasholders shell the subsidence cause substantial stresses in the stanchions and in the shell plates. The gasholder had to be preserved beeing a world cultural heritage.

What we did

To evaluate the size and shape of the subsidence we first had to define the measuring points and the time intervals between the measurements based upon the prognosis of the subsidence. Calculating the limit deformations of the gasholder we were able to determine the conditions when we had to uplift the stanchions. To ensure the uplift of the stanchions we calculated the necessary reinforcement of the foundation and the footers. A detailed guideline for the uplift sequence helped the owner of the gasholder to perform the necessary steps on his own responsibility.
